OIKYOTAAN,fronted by Bonnie Chakraborty, is a performing group which has developed a sound rooted in the rhythm and melody of folk music. This foundation is created using equally unique components from folk and contemporary music and attaching them in an interesting set of arrangements. Centered around Fakiri, Bhatiyalli, Jhumur and Bhavaiyya Bengali folk melodies, the sound concentrates on building lyrical phrases within a layered rhythm of folk and classical instruments. Oikyotaan aims at reaching a space where folk and contemporary music complement each other without displacing the essential sound elements and aesthetics of the other. The group comprises of musicians based in Chennai from various musical and cultural backgrounds. Since the formation two years ago, Oikyotaan has performed throughout Southern and Eastern India. They are now looking forward to integrate their sound internationally through collaborations and performances.
In ancient times Yakshas and Yakshinis were the protectors of Saints and Saviours, givingthem the support required to fulfill their purpose!.Flautist Balasai,Sitarist Sivaramakrishna,Violonist Kalpana,Guitarist Johnny,along with Percussionists Ganesh and Ramakrishnan,form the YAKSHAS of today,protecting the rights of their musical heritage! These astounding musicians having mastered their armoury o f instruments,have now come together to create a path breaking soundscape rooted in the classical music tradition of India. As musical warriors they share a combined experience of over a hundred years!
